GY!BE and Montreal collective members

Set Fire to Flames

A loose, haunted recording project built from room tone, fragments, and collective improvisation.

profile

Set Fire to Flames is a Canadian experimental collective formed in 2001 and closely associated with the Montreal post-rock and avant-garde scene around GY!BE and Silver Mt. Zion.

The project is known for raw, improvisational recordings that blur composition, ambient noise, field recording, and sound art. Its records were shaped by unusual recording environments, including decaying domestic spaces that became part of the sound.

The music often feels less like a conventional band than a document of a room under pressure: creaking floors, distant voices, bowed strings, damaged melodies, and long passages of unease.
