Set Fire to Flames is a Canadian experimental music collective formed in 2001, closely associated with the post-rock and avant-garde scene in Montreal. The group is often considered a sister project to Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, sharing members such as Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau, and Thierry Amar. Set Fire to Flames is known for its raw, improvisational style, blending ambient noise, field recordings, and haunting melodies to create deeply atmospheric and emotionally charged compositions.
The collective’s music is characterized by its experimental nature, often incorporating unconventional sounds and recording techniques. Their work is deeply introspective, exploring themes of despair, isolation, and the human condition. Set Fire to Flames’ recordings were made in unique locations, such as abandoned houses, which added a layer of authenticity and rawness to their sound. This approach created an immersive listening experience, blurring the lines between music and sound art.
Set Fire to Flames released only two albums during their active years, but both are considered seminal works in the experimental and post-rock genres. Their debut album, "Sings Reign Rebuilder" (2001), is a sprawling, multi-layered masterpiece that combines orchestral arrangements with dissonant noise and spoken word. Their second and final album, "Telegraphs in Negative / Mouths Trapped in Static" (2003), further pushed the boundaries of experimental music, featuring fragmented compositions and eerie soundscapes.
Despite their short-lived existence, Set Fire to Flames left a lasting impact on the experimental music scene. Their willingness to explore the fringes of sound and emotion inspired countless artists and listeners. The collective’s work remains a testament to the power of music as a medium for profound emotional and artistic expression.
