Saltland: Ethereal Explorations in Sound and Emotion

Saltland is the solo project of Montreal-based cellist Rebecca Foon, known for her contributions to Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Esmerine. With Saltland, Foon combines her classical training with experimental soundscapes, creating a deeply atmospheric and emotionally resonant musical experience.

Debuting with the album "I Thought It Was Us But It Was All of Us" (2013), Saltland introduced listeners to a world of lush cello arrangements, subtle electronics, and haunting vocals. The album features collaborations with other Montreal-based musicians, including members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who added layers of texture to Foon's introspective compositions. Themes of love, loss, and ecological awareness permeate the album, offering a meditative and reflective journey.

Saltland’s second album, "A Common Truth" (2017), delves deeper into environmental themes, exploring humanity's relationship with nature and the looming crisis of climate change. The minimalist arrangements emphasize the emotive power of the cello, while the sparse use of vocals and ambient electronics creates a sense of urgency and intimacy.

Rebecca Foon’s work as Saltland exemplifies her ability to bridge the worlds of classical and experimental music. The project has garnered acclaim for its originality and emotional depth, resonating with fans of both modern classical and post-rock genres.
