Clues was an indie rock band formed in Montreal in 2007, featuring Alden Penner (formerly of The Unicorns) and Brendan Reed (associated with Arcade Fire and Les Angles Morts). Known for their raw, experimental sound and DIY ethos, Clues quickly garnered attention in the indie music scene. While their lifespan was brief, the band’s innovative approach and unique energy left a lasting impression.
Clues released their self-titled debut album, "Clues" (2009), through Constellation Records. The album blended jagged rhythms, unpredictable structures, and introspective lyrics, resulting in a sound that was as challenging as it was captivating. Tracks like "Remember Severed Head" and "Perfect Fit" exemplified their eclectic style, combining Penner’s unconventional melodies with Reed’s dynamic percussion.
The band’s live performances were equally compelling, marked by their intense energy and willingness to experiment with sound and arrangement. Clues cultivated an aura of mystery, often performing in unconventional spaces and avoiding excessive media exposure.
Although the band disbanded shortly after the release of their debut, Clues remains a noteworthy project in the Montreal indie scene. Their music is a testament to the creative spirit of collaboration and the boldness of artistic experimentation.
